Strategies & Recommendations

National data indicates that suicide is a public health problem. The Veterinarian industry has been uniquely impacted as well. Whether you need to support your clients, colleagues, or staff we can help.

Suicide Affects All Industries.

We support organizations across all industries and understand the specific industries may need unique approaches. We are here to support your efforts within your industry.

  • Suicide attempts involving a firearm are more likely to result in death than attempts using any other means (Azrael and Miller, 2016). If firearms are available to a person who is thinking about taking his or her life, the presence of firearms might be linked with a higher likelihood of suicide and higher regional suicide rates.

  • Language and visual effects including scenes in all media forms have great impact on viewers. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 35 (CDC) and the highest female suicide rate from 2012 to 2015 occurred in the combined fields of arts, design, entertainment, sports and media.

No matter your role in the industry we can help you tailor content to be suicide prevention safe and help implement strategies for talent, employees and creative assets.

  • Of all the factors associated with suicide, few are more closely connected than substance use. Individuals with a substance use disorder are nearly 6 times as likely to attempt suicide at some point in their life (AddictionCenter). Among Veterans, men with a substance use disorder are more than twice as likely to die by suicide (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2021).

  • Our law enforcement professionals have increased rates of suicide and need comprehensive support to help them make a positive impact within the community.

  • The complex problem of suicide affects the entire country, though some industries such as construction are disproportionally impacted. Data from the 2016 National Violent Death Reporting System showed that out of 20 different industries studied, men and women in the construction industry had suicide rates of 45.3 per 100,000 and 9.4 per 100,000, respectively (Peterson et al., 2020). Of the 22 occupational groups studied, men and women working in the construction and extraction occupation had suicide rates of 49.4 per 100,000 and 25.5 per 100,000, respectively (Peterson et al., 2020).

  • According to American Medical Veterinary Association (AMVA) statistics, 1 in 6 veterinarians have contemplated suicide.

  • Physician suicide has been a problem in healthcare for decades. Studies dating back to the 1920s show that physicians suffer from suicide at high rates. Physicians with mental health conditions have long been discriminated against and suicides have often been kept hidden from colleagues and the public.
